Designing a front door for water

Before a single page of the World Waternet website was designed, every page was on the wall. This is how mapping first made the design calmer, faster and easier to agree on.

The brief

World Waternet supports public water operators in many countries. The website had to explain one shared mission, and give every project and partner a place of its own. [Eerste opzet: herschrijf in je eigen woorden.]

Mapping first

We started with the structure, not the look. Homepage, projects, partners and the why, what and how of the organisation: every page as a small sketch, connected on one large board.

“When everyone can see the whole site at once, feedback is about the story, not about pixels.”

One front door

The homepage became the front door: the mission first, then a clear route into projects and partners. The orange of the identity guides the eye, the photography from the field does the rest.

What I learned

Showing the structure early saves rounds later. Next time I would bring the board into the very first meeting.
